Tummy Tuck Mommy Makeover

Are You Ready for a Flatter, Firmer Midsection?

After pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight changes, the abdomen often holds onto loose skin, weak muscles, and stubborn fat that no amount of effort can fix.

A tummy tuck, also called an abdominoplasty, removes loose skin and tightens the abdominal muscles to restore a flatter, firmer midsection. For many patients at our practice, it is the foundation of a complete mommy makeover and the procedure that delivers the most visible transformation.

A standalone tummy tuck typically takes two to three hours under general anesthesia at our accredited surgical facility. When combined with other procedures as part of a mommy makeover, surgical time may extend further to address everything in a single session.

Benefits of a Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck offers several benefits that go beyond appearance and can improve how you feel in your everyday life.

  • Flatter, Firmer Midsection: A tummy tuck removes excess skin and tightens the abdominal wall for a smoother shape.
  • Targeted Fat Removal: Liposuction can be added to refine the waist, hips, and lower back during your tummy tuck.
  • Repair Core Muscles: Diastasis recti repair restores muscle separation that is common after pregnancy.
  • One Surgery: A tummy tuck pairs naturally with breast surgery and liposuction in a single mommy makeover.
  • Improved C-Section Scar: An old or raised cesarean scar can be revised or removed during the same surgery.
  • Long-Lasting, Natural Results: With a stable weight and healthy lifestyle, your tummy tuck results can last for years.

Ideal Candidates for a Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck is best suited for patients with specific abdominal concerns that diet and exercise alone cannot fix. Most candidates fall into a few common categories that share a similar set of physical traits.

Loose Abdominal Skin After Pregnancy

Skin stretched during pregnancy that does not return to its original shape is one of the most common reasons women choose a tummy tuck.

Separated Abdominal Muscles

Diastasis recti is muscle separation along the midline of the abdomen that often happens during pregnancy and cannot be repaired through exercise.

Stubborn Lower Belly Fat

Fat that sits below the belly button and resists diet and exercise is a strong indicator that surgery may help where lifestyle changes have stalled.

Existing C-Section Scar Concerns

Women with old or raised C-section scars often combine scar revision with a tummy tuck for cleaner results.

Significant Weight Loss Patients

This includes women on GLP-1 medications who have lost weight and want to address the loose skin that follows.

Stable Weight and Done Having Children

Future pregnancies and major weight changes can reverse tummy tuck results, so timing matters for lasting outcomes.

Our team will evaluate your candidacy for a tummy tuck during your initial consultation.

What to Expect During a Consultation at our NYC Office

Your tummy tuck consultation begins with an honest conversation. Dr. Hoschander will listen to your goals, ask about your medical and pregnancy history, and examine the abdominal area to assess skin laxity, muscle separation, and fat distribution.

From there, we will walk you through what a tummy tuck can realistically achieve for your body and how it might fit into a broader mommy makeover plan if other procedures are right for you. We will explain the technique, the incision pattern, and what your results may look like.

The team at NYC Mommy Makeover Center will then review every detail of the process with you. This includes pre-operative preparation, what to expect on surgery day, recovery timelines, and financing options. By the end of the visit, you will have a clear plan and a personalized quote.

How to Prepare for Your Tummy Tuck

Good preparation makes recovery smoother and helps protect your final result. Below are the steps every patient should take in the weeks leading up to surgery.

Stop Certain Medications

Pause blood thinners, aspirin, and certain supplements as directed by our team before surgery.

Recovery Setup

Set up a comfortable recovery space with pillows that support a slightly bent position and keep tension off the abdomen.

Stock the Pantry

Prepare easy meals and protein-rich snacks in advance to fuel healing during the first week without much effort.

Plan Childcare Coverage

Arrange help with kids and household tasks for at least the first 7 to 10 days after your procedure.

Compression Garment

Purchase a properly fitted abdominal compression garment ahead of time so it is ready the day you come home from surgery.

Quit Smoking and Arrange a Ride

Stop smoking at least four weeks before surgery and arrange transportation home from our surgical facility.

Taking time to prepare for a tummy tuck helps protect your safety and supports a faster recovery.

What Happens During Your Tummy Tuck

Knowing what happens during tummy tuck surgery at the NYC Mommy Makeover Center helps you feel more in control on the day of the procedure. Here is a step-by-step look at how it all unfolds from start to finish.

The day of your tummy tuck begins with anesthesia, which keeps you fully asleep and comfortable from start to finish. Our surgeon and the surgical team meet with you before surgery to answer any last questions and review the plan one more time. Once anesthesia is given by a board-certified anesthesiologist, you will not feel or remember any part of the procedure.

Once you are asleep, our surgeon makes a horizontal incision across the lower abdomen, typically running from hip to hip just above the pubic area. This placement keeps the incision hidden under most clothing and swimwear. A second small incision is also made around the belly button if a full tummy tuck is needed to maintain a natural-looking navel position.

With access to the abdominal wall, the surgical team carefully lifts the skin and underlying fat away from the muscle. Excess loose skin is then trimmed and removed. This is the step that creates the dramatic flattening effect of a tummy tuck. Stubborn fat in the area is also addressed during this stage to refine the contour.

Once the loose skin and fat are removed, attention shifts to the abdominal muscles. If diastasis recti is present, the separated muscles are stitched back together with permanent sutures along the midline. This creates a tighter, flatter abdominal wall and restores core strength that pregnancy or weight changes may have weakened over time.

After the muscles are repaired, the remaining skin is gently pulled down and reshaped to fit the new contour. The belly button is repositioned through the small upper incision so it sits in a natural location on the new, tighter abdomen. This is when the final shape and figure begin to take form.

Once the new contour is set, the incisions are closed with layered sutures designed to minimize scarring and support healing. A surgical dressing and compression garment are placed before you wake up. You will be moved to our recovery area and monitored closely until you are ready to go home with a friend or family member.

Tummy Tuck Techniques

There is no single approach to a tummy tuck. Our team will recommend the technique that best fits your anatomy, your skin, and your goals.

Full Tummy Tuck

A full tummy tuck is the most common technique and addresses both the upper and lower abdomen. The incision runs from hip to hip and a second incision is made around the belly button.

This approach is best for patients with significant loose skin, separated muscles, or both above and below the belly button.

Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck uses a shorter incision and is limited to the area below the belly button. There is no incision around the navel.

This technique is best for patients with mild skin laxity and minimal muscle separation in the lower abdomen only.

Extended Tummy Tuck

An extended tummy tuck uses a longer incision that wraps slightly around the hips. It addresses loose skin in the abdomen as well as the flanks.

This option is often appropriate for patients after major weight loss who have skin laxity that extends beyond the front of the abdomen.

Procedures Often Combined with a Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck is the foundation of most mommy makeovers at our practice. Combining procedures into one surgery shortens recovery, reduces total cost, and delivers a complete transformation in one step.

Liposuction

Liposuction is the most common addition to a tummy tuck. It refines the waist, hips, and back to create smoother contours that complement the flatter abdomen.

Together, a tummy tuck and liposuction deliver more dramatic body contouring than either procedure alone.

Breast Lift

A breast lift restores breasts that have lost shape after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Pairing a breast lift with a tummy tuck addresses the two most common post-pregnancy concerns in one mommy makeover.

This combination is one of the most requested at our practice.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation adds volume to breasts that have deflated after breastfeeding. Combined with a tummy tuck, augmentation delivers a balanced transformation across the breasts and abdomen.

A breast lift and augmentation can also be performed together as part of a full mommy makeover.

Labiaplasty

Some patients choose to add labiaplasty to address changes in the labia after childbirth. Combining it with a tummy tuck means one recovery period instead of two with a more complete result.

Tummy Tuck Recovery Timeline

Most patients heal from a tummy tuck over the course of several months. Below is a general recovery timeline of what to expect at each stage, from the first day of recovery through your final results.

Days 1 to 3

You will rest at home with help from a caregiver. Swelling, tightness, and discomfort are normal, and pain is well managed with prescribed medication.

Week 1

Light walking is encouraged and most patients are off prescription pain medication by day five. You will need help with childcare and chores during this stage.

Week 2

Most patients return to desk work and light daily activity by week two. Compression garments are worn to support healing and reduce swelling.

Weeks 3 to 4

You will feel close to normal in everyday life. Light cardio is often cleared around week four, and tightness across the abdomen continues to improve.

Weeks 5 to 6

Strenuous activity and full workouts are typically cleared at the six-week mark. Swelling continues to fade and incision lines begin to soften.

Months 3 to 6

Final results come into view between three and six months post-surgery. Residual swelling resolves, scars fade, and the abdomen reaches its final shape.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tummy Tucks

Here are the questions we hear most often from patients considering a tummy tuck, whether on its own or as part of a mommy makeover. If your question is not answered here, schedule a consultation at the NYC Mommy Makeover Center to learn more.

A standalone tummy tuck typically takes two to three hours under general anesthesia. When performed as part of a mommy makeover with breast surgery, liposuction, or other procedures, the total surgical time will be longer to address everything in one session.

Some scarring is unavoidable, but our surgeon uses techniques to keep incisions hidden along the bikini line. Most scars fade significantly over the first year and can be improved with topical treatments.

Yes. Many patients combine a tummy tuck with a breast lift, breast augmentation, or both as part of a full mommy makeover. This is one of the most common combinations at our practice.

That depends on your goals and your anatomy. Some patients only need abdominal correction. Others benefit from combining a tummy tuck with breast surgery, liposuction, or labiaplasty in a single procedure.

Yes, when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon in an accredited facility. We tailor every plan to keep total surgical time within safe limits for the patient.

Yes. Diastasis recti repair is a standard part of most tummy tucks at our practice. The separated muscles are stitched back together to restore core strength and a flatter midsection.

No. A tummy tuck is a body contouring procedure for patients at or near their goal weight. It removes loose skin and refines shape but is not designed to replace weight loss.

We recommend waiting at least six months after childbirth and three to six months after weaning if you breastfed. This gives the body time to fully recover before surgery.
